If you are experiencing pain, tingling, or numbness in the buttocks and back of the leg, which may exacerbate after sitting for prolonged time, climbing stairs, walking, or running; you may be suffering from piriformis syndrome.
This cluster of symptoms occurs when your piriformis muscle is injured or inflamed, causing sciatic nerve compression. The compression of the sciatic nerve is what elicits the pain.
The best way to reduce the pain, is to stretch the muscle, massage, and take anti- inflammatory drugs.
