Do you know what knee injury Tracy McGrady and Kobe Bryant suffered from during their basketball career?

This trending injury is called, a Bumper Fracture.

When you hear the term Bumper fractures, the first thing that probably come to your mind is an automobile accident, right? If so, you are thinking in the right direction.

Surprisingly, only 25% of these cases manifest from bumper –knee collisions. Majority of Tibial Plateau Fractures occur during sporting events or recreational activity related i.e. basketball, football etc.

The most common causes of this injury are:

1. Axial loading, such as a fall on the knee directly. 2. Result of lateral directed forces or from twisting of the knee.

Symptoms to be aware of are:

1. Pain while weight bearing, limited range of motion of knee, tenderness, swelling, gross deformity, pale or cold feet, and numbness or tingling sensation in foot.

It is important to get a MRI and Xray to rule out other pathologies, check for additional fractures or soft tissue injuries if you are experiencing these symptoms.

Stay tuned for prevention techniques and rehabilitation strategies…..

Stay Healthy!
